Working Together:
Rev Malaika and The Sanctuary

Listening, connection and community-led change

Over the past four years, The Sanctuary of Peace and Healing has been listening to the voices of Manchester. Through this work, people have shared experiences of loss, isolation, trauma and the challenges affecting their lives and communities.

One of the needs that emerged strongly was the importance of creating more opportunities for people within Manchester’s African Caribbean community to come together, particularly in the face of bereavement, violence and the impact of gang-related difficulties on individuals, families and neighbourhoods.

It was through this commitment to listening that The Sanctuary began working with Rev Malaika Fujo.

About Malaika

Ceremonies, workshops, spirituality and personal growth

“I am myself; you are yourself; together we are united.”

Rev Malaika Fujo is an interfaith minister, community activist, workshop facilitator and spiritual practitioner. Her work brings together spirituality, creativity, storytelling and human connection, offering people opportunities to reflect on their lives, explore meaning and discover new possibilities.

Malaika's own story is shaped by African roots, a Caribbean heart and a life lived in the UK. Growing up on a white working-class estate, she experienced racialised stigma and isolation. These experiences helped shape her commitment to social activism, spiritual practice and building a more inclusive world.

Her approach welcomes people from different faith traditions, as well as those who do not identify with a particular religion. She believes in the importance of honouring individual experience while recognising the shared humanity that connects us.

Whether holding a ceremony, facilitating a workshop or supporting someone through a challenging time, Malaika seeks to create spaces characterised by openness, respect, reflection and care.

Ceremonies to honour life's important moments

As an experienced interfaith minister, Malaika creates and leads bespoke ceremonies to honour significant moments in people's lives.

Her ceremonial work includes:

  • Baby blessings and naming ceremonies.

  • Rites of passage and birthdays.

  • Weddings and celebrations of love.

  • Celebrations of life and funerals.

Malaika's interfaith approach places love, meaning and the people being honoured at the centre of each ceremony. Her work can be tailored to reflect an individual's beliefs, values, relationships and wishes.

Workshops for reflection, connection and healing

Malaika offers workshops that draw on storytelling, spiritual traditions, creative activities and reflective practices. These can provide opportunities for individuals and groups to explore personal experiences, develop understanding and connect with others.

Spiritual counselling and personal reflection

Malaika offers spiritual counselling for people exploring questions of faith, spirituality, purpose, meaning and personal development.

These conversations provide space to reflect on life's challenges, consider existential questions and explore what brings meaning and direction. Depending on the individual's interests, Malaika may draw on reflective writing, spiritual routines, forgiveness practices and other approaches to personal reflection.

Her work is informed by a belief that people can benefit from having space to explore their experiences and reconnect with their own sense of meaning and possibility.
